The Mario Correa Rengifo E.S.E. Departmental Hospital, in partnership with the Rotary Club, successfully carried out its first day of reconstructive ear surgeries, benefiting an 11-year-old girl and a 38-year-old adult, both of whom have microtia, a congenital condition that affects ear development.
The procedure, which marks a milestone in specialized care for the Valle del Cauca population, was performed by craniofacial surgeon Iván Torres, who is based in Mexico. The specialist expressed his satisfaction at returning to the country to perform these procedures on vulnerable patients and explained:
“These are reconstructions performed in two surgical stages. In this first phase, costal cartilage was harvested to shape the new ears and position them correctly. It’s a major step forward in improving our patients’ quality of life,” Torres noted.
Hospital Director Juan Carlos Corrales highlighted the positive impact of this initiative:
“The group of patients awaiting this surgery can now count on the ‘Mario Correa Rengifo’ Hospital, which will provide the facilities and the operating room. We hope to serve the population that requires these surgical procedures, as we did today, starting with an 11-year-old girl and a 38-year-old adult,” stated Corrales.
He also emphasized that performing these procedures at public health institutions helps reduce barriers to access and ensures timely, high-quality care for the people of Valle del Cauca.
Thanks to the strategic partnership with the Rotary Club, the hospital continues to expand its range of specialized reconstructive procedures, reinforcing its commitment to quality, timeliness, and patient-centered care.
